Volvo Ocean Race 2014/15 – Producer’s Log #3

Posted by: Jo Rees on January 9th, 2015 IN Fun stuff

Welcome back to our Volvo Ocean Race Producer’s Log. Our first update for 2015 but our third port-of-call in this grueling trans-global race. Well, I say grueling, but whilst the 7 teams were battling it out in the open seas I popped back to Blighty to celebrate Christmas on dry land.

After a truly tough few days of eating and drinking I headed to Abu Dhabi where 6 teams had already made port with my personal favourites, Dongfeng in second place. Team Vestas Wind dramatically came aground off the coast of Mauritius and have retired from the race for now……all crew thankfully safe.

Situated on a peninsula opposite Corniche Beach the Race Village was a hive of activity with so much going on from rock climbing to camel rides. What really struck me about Abu Dhabi was the fabulous juxtaposition of modernity against age-old tradition and there was certainly an eclectic mix in the Village.

I was lucky enough to spend New Year’s Eve at Saadiyat Beach Club and saw in 2015 in style surrounded by my new VOR friends but with an early-ish night to prepare for our first show on New Year’s Day.

This was a family and friends viewing that felt very special since so many of the VOR team were reunited with their families for Christmas. Our financial controller Sarah Carter, who happened to be on holiday in Dubai, came as my Line Up family and the show was incredibly well received by all.

On the 2nd January the all-ladies team, SCA were victorious in the in-port race, the end of which was marked by a stunning show by the UAE’s aerial display squad, Al Forsan.

Our show on 2nd January was pre-empted by a fantastically exciting talk from Knut Frostad, CEO of Volvo Ocean Race, who spoke about the reality of life on board a racing yacht alongside Martin Strömberg from Dongfeng race team.

On the 3rd January the teams set sail on the 4,642 nautical miles to Sanya in China. They’ll pass India, Malacca, Singapore and then either Borneo or Vietnam before heading to China’s Hainan Island. I, on the other hand, flew safely back to London to prepare for my trip to China on 2nd February and to squeeze in a few more local projects in the meantime.

A fantastic start to 2015!
