Line Up close and personal: Neil Thompson, Creative Director

Posted by: Neil Thompson on August 14th, 2014 IN Fun stuff

We thought it would be a good idea to introduce you to our wonderful team on a more personal level, so welcome to the very first post of our new blog series ‘Line Up close and personal’!

Our Creative Director, Neil Thompson, was the first to step up and talk about his passions in and outside of work. He’s also shared some fun facts about himself (including a questionable choice of first record ever bought!).

Close & personal 1

What three adjectives do you think your friends would use to describe you?

I would hate to think!

Apart from working at Line Up(!), what are your other passions?

Speed and adrenalin are passions of mine when not at work; I love fast cars as most of the people who know me will tell you. During the winter I love skiing down the Alps and in the summer I cycle. Or if I’m fortunate enough to get away I do like to scuba dive!

Who would you invite to your ideal dinner party (dead or alive) and why?

Oh god I would love to have dinner with the late Ayrton Senna, he was such a legend. And I guess if he was too busy, I’d see if Cassius Clay “Mohamed Ali” was up for it, just for the pure drama, and for the chance to meet a true champion. If I was allowed one more guest it would have to be Salvador Dali – I’d love to know and bottle exactly what was going on in his head!

Do you support a football team?

Yes and no. My team would have to be my home team of Aston Villa, but don’t ask me who’s in the team now! From a young age I’ve always been drawn to watch Brazil’s flair and the great Pelé, (showing my age there). I was lucky enough a few years back to design the Brazilian National Football Museum and headquarters for the CBF. The design of the structure had the ball at the heart whilst the rising building spun around it like the curve ball heading for goal. It was going to be an amazing architectural piece on the coast of Rio but like most dream jobs, politics got in the way!

What has been your highlight working at Line Up?

I have so many highlights working at Line Up but what stands out for me is our work with Volvo. Creating a set in Gothenburg’s Opera house, which changed throughout the day with the different subject matter, and utilising all of the Opera House’s amazing facilities, has got to be one of the best. I also loved creating a presence for them at the Goodwood Festival of Speed … there are so many!

What are your three all-time favourite songs?

I couldn’t possibly choose three, I have such a varied taste in music and it changes with my moods. I always have to have music playing especially in the studio but it may be a bit too loud for Gerry our Financial Director – sorry, Gerry!

What was the first record you ever bought?

I’d like to think it was something cool like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but I think it may have been The Police… or Alice Cooper. I did say I have very varied tastes.

Do you have any unusual hobbies and interests?

Photography – not that unusual I know but old style cameras are so stunning as design pieces. I think my daughter has the bug too and loves taking black and white photography.

What’s been your greatest achievement outside work?

I do like to run most weekends, and have achieved a few 10K runs in under 50 minutes but I guess the marathon is a goal I’d like to achieve…. someday I will!

Where’s your favourite place to go on holiday and why?

Well I’m lucky with my job in that I get to travel the globe and have been fortunate enough to visit most places in the world, but I never tire of going to the Alps. I think it’s because my grandmother took a photo when she was 23 on a trip to the Alps which hung in her house. Ever since my first visit I’ve always tried to find the spot where she took it. However, if I was to pick one place it would have to be Halkidiki in Greece as it has great diving, and the hotel we stay at just has everything our family’s needs.

What’s your favourite ever TV ad?

I know it’s wrong in our industry, but I don’t really get time for TV and I loathe adverts – there are too many ads for gambling or money lenders!

Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?

Anyone with bad BO – smelly!

What’s top of your ‘bucket list’ of things you really want to do in life?

Dive the Great Barrier Reef before we destroy it completely.

What kind of car do you drive?

My pride of joy is my Black 1998 Lotus Elise, but not for everyday driving – that would just kill it in traffic. It’s like me; it hates to go slow and sit waiting. My everyday car is a Black Citroen C3 Picasso it has 83K miles on the clock in three years back and forth taking the family to the Alps. She’s a great workhorse!
