Line Up Close and Personal: Carla Maylin, Office Manager and Production Support

Posted by: Line Up on February 9th, 2015 IN Fun stuff

Welcome back to Line Up Close and Personal in which one of the team takes some time out to talk to Crane’s Eye View about their lives in and out of the office.  This time it’s Carla Maylin, the backbone of Line Up office life.  Ambitious, sorted and everyone’s friend, she’s got slightly dodgy taste in music but a fantastic dinner party guest wishlist.

What three adjectives do you think your friends would use to describe you?

Vivacious, kind, ailurophile (a cat lover to those who don’t know!)

What has been your highlight working at Line Up?

Working recently with the team on the Johnson & Johnson MENAP Annual Meeting from brief to completion which included travelling to Dubai – a first for me.

Apart from working at Line Up, what are your other passions?

My family, friends, yoga and food – I make a wicked saag paneer.  Oh, and I’ve just started Salsa classes.

Can you tell us an interesting fact about you that not many people know?

My great grandparents used to live on a canal barge and transport goods up and down the Grand Union.

Who would you invite to your ideal dinner party and why?

The American activist, Ruby Bridges.  I still remember the moment when my mum told me who she was, it made me realise that going to school was a privilege.

I’d also invite Madonna and Prince as I think I would enjoy listening to some of their stories.  Michael McIntyre or Micky Flanagan would be next on the list because I love comedians – I’d add Seth MacFarlane in there too, oh and Russell Kane!

Can I have a few more?  Johnny Depp, Bruce Lee and my new crush Ricki Hall.

Do you support a football team?

No, but I get drawn in if it’s on while I’m in the pub.  My late uncle used to support Chelsea and my older brother supports Arsenal so I was always surrounded by lots of footy banter growing up.  They took me to my first football match when I was 9, it was Arsenal v Coventry and it was a draw.  That was the first time I understood football formations because I could see the whole pitch

What are your three all-time favourite songs?

I could list some great club classics, I love music and have an eclectic taste but today I’ll go with:

Crazy for you, Madonna

Light my fire, The Doors

Three little birds, Bob Marley

What was the first record you ever bought?

I bought two on the same day: Band Aid and Living Doll by Cliff Richard & The Young Ones

Do you have any unusual hobbies and interests?

Is night-clubbing at 40 unusual?

What’s been your greatest achievement outside work?

Trekking through Chapada Diamantina National Park in Brazil.

What’s the funniest/weirdest experience you’ve ever had?

I bumped into a friend randomly at Sharm el Sheik airport and jumped out and surprised him.  It turned out that we were on the same flight home.  I just celebrated New Year’s Eve with the him only to learn that he was going to Fuerteventura 6 days later – as was I!  It turned out that he was staying in the hotel next door to me.  Is he following me around?

Where’s your favourite place to go on holiday and why?

Orlando  – I went for my 29th birthday with my mum and my nan.  I love rollercoasters and rides and I also love the customer service you receive in America. I wish it was a bit more like that in the UK.

What’s your favourite ever TV ad?

I enjoy a good food jingle so I’m going to say A Finger of Fudge or Um Bongo.

Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?

Any Politician!

What’s top of your ‘bucket list’ of things you really want to do in life?

I’d like to travel in Cambodia and Thailand.

What 3 people do you most admire in the world?

My mum, for being such a strong woman while I was growing up and telling me I could be anything I wanted to be.

My older brother Lee, the best dad and husband I know.

My younger brother Craig, who is in the Army Infantry and 4 Rifles Nordic Skiing Biathlon team.  He has just come back with a medal for Best Novice – not bad considering he only just started skiing!

What kind of car do you drive?

VW Golf
